Read the written statement of the Minister of Health Mr. Konstantinos Ioannou regarding the treatment of the coronavirus

Despite the reduced number of confirmed cases recorded so far in Cyprus, the measures we have decided from the beginning are much stricter than the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). This conscious decision, on the basis of which even more drastic measures should not be ruled out in the light of the next day, and the WHO decision to declare a pandemic, is strictly aimed only at limiting, as far as possible, the chances of the virus spreading widely. in our country.

I share the disruption caused to society and the business community by several of the measures we have decided, but once again I want to assure you that with instructions from the President of the Republic, a top priority for the Government is to take all necessary measures that will shield the country and the population to the greatest extent possible.

For more effective action, I have set up a scientific committee with the participation of independent experts of recognized prestige, who will assist the effort of the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health, whose executives I would like to commend for their tireless efforts to manage this project. .

On this occasion, I reiterate the call to all citizens to follow the basic rules of personal hygiene and take measures of self-protection, especially those who have recently traveled to countries with cases of coronavirus. Those who show symptoms should only contact the 24-hour call center 1420 directly. For questions about the coronavirus, citizens are asked to be informed by the website created by the Press and Information Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health at www.pio.gov.cy/coronavirus.
