An announcement inviting the two sides to come to the dialogue table for the settlement of the Cyprus issue was issued by the bi-communal platform Unite Cyprus Now.

Among other things, the announcement calls on the authorities of the pseudo-state to take the necessary steps to open the roadblock of Deryneia, while blaming the Greek Cypriot authorities for the queues of kilometers in recent days at the roadblocks, for which according to the platform the small number of staff is responsible. at roadblocks.

In fact, the announcement refers to the recent course of motorcyclists for the Isaac-Solomou Memorial March that led to a symbolic, short-term closure of roadblocks.

"Motorcyclists in the southern part of Cyprus closed roadblocks without being punished. However, the transition from one side to the other is covered by the basic universal right of free movement and must be ensured, facilitated and encouraged ", the announcement concludes.

Read the announcement as it is:

Eliminate all obstacles to financial cooperation and the opening of roadblocks.

The Cypriots have now realized that without a solution to the Cyprus problem, it is impossible to have a healthy and stable economy. Recent economic developments in the northern part of Cyprus, as happened in the southern part a few years ago, show that only with a solution to the Cyprus problem can there be a sustainable and strong economy, with prosperity on the island for all its inhabitants.

The Cypriot economy, whose growth prospects are being undermined by the division, is vulnerable to crises and financial instability. The solution will normalize Cyprus' political and economic relations and unlock a wide range of opportunities with enormous and ongoing benefits, such as increased foreign investment in tourism, shipping, construction, education, real estate, and trade. It will also be easier for Cyprus, in case of a solution, to have revenues from natural gas.

In this spirit, we call on the leaderships of both sides on the island to immediately resume efforts for a solution, while until then they must remove all administrative, physical, legal and psychological obstacles to economic cooperation.

The Turkish Cypriot authorities should, without delay, take the appropriate steps to open the Deryneia roadblock to facilitate the transition from one side to the other. The roadblock in Apliki should be opened as well as other roadblocks to promote communication, contacts, dialogue as well as economic, social and cultural cooperation between the communities on the island. Such a thing, without a doubt, will contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

There is not only great frustration with the delay in opening new roadblocks. There is also great frustration because the authorities, on both sides, do not even seem to be able to ensure the smooth operation of the existing roadblocks. In recent weeks, there have been queues of vehicles for many kilometers at the roadblocks of Agios Dometios and Strovilia because there was not enough staff.

But beyond the structural and organizational problems, the roadblocks were also, in some cases, completely closed. Recently, for example, motorcyclists in the southern part of Cyprus closed roadblocks without being punished. However, the transition from one side to the other is covered by the basic universal right of free movement and must be ensured, facilitated and encouraged.
