What is needed is for the UN envoy and the UN itself to assume their responsibilities in defending the human rights of a people who have been suffering for so many years, said Archbishop George, in his statements after his morning meeting with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, at the Presidential Palace.

The Archbishop told reporters that they had "a productive meeting" and that they discussed various issues of the Archdiocese in which the Government is also involved, while they were informed and discussed about the national issue.

"These are matters in which the Archdiocese cooperates with the Government, such as in the Makarios Foundation, such as in the architecture school that will be housed in the school of Faneromeni and many other matters, and we were also fortunate to have a wide information about our national issue", he added.

Asked by a journalist if he conveyed any of his concerns about the national issue, he said, "of course, both our concerns and his are expressed by him (the President of the Republic) and the way in which he deals with the various problems we discussed and I think that we need the support of the entire Cypriot people, of the entire Hellenism, to be able to overcome the difficulties we are encountering".

When asked what makes him worried, the Archbishop replied "the fixed plans of the Turks", who, as he said, are not backing down but want to implement the plans they have for Cyprus. "They are not interested in the Turkish Cypriots, nor in the human rights of our population. They are interested in their national geopolitical interests," he said.

When asked if the President of the Republic should meet with the Turkish Cypriot leader after the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories and the advance of the Turks in the buffer zone, the Archbishop said that it is the President who will regulate the situations and set the conditions.

Asked if he is satisfied with the appointment of a UN envoy for the Cyprus issue, he said that it is something "the Church does not talk about". What is needed, he added, is for the UN envoy and the UN itself "to assume their responsibilities in defending the human rights of a people who have been suffering for so many years".

"The goals of the UN are different and not always to find the middle ground between the difference between a conqueror and a conquered", he concluded.
