Johanson starts contacts in Cyprus for immigration

The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, will be in Cyprus today, Tuesday, on an official visit, as part of a tour to Greece and Cyprus, for a series of contacts with the object of migration management and the implementation of the Commission's Action Plan for the Eastern Mediterranean. The Commissioner will visit the Pournara Reception Center, while she will also meet with competent ministers.

The Johansson contacts are based on the ongoing implementation work of the EU Eastern Mediterranean Route Action Plan. The implementation of the Action Plan includes strengthening the partnership with countries of origin and transit along this route, in full coordination with the Member States.

The EU, it is noted in a related announcement, still continues to provide financial and operational support to Cyprus and Greece for migration and border management, including through support from EU organizations (Frontex, European Union Agency for Asylum, Europol).

On Tuesday, Mrs. Johansson will have meetings in the morning with the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, and the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evangelou, and in the afternoon with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kobo.

Also, in the morning the Commissioner will be at the "Zino" Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and in the afternoon at the "Pournara" Reception Center.

Also, later in the afternoon, Mrs. Johansson will meet with stakeholders active in the field of immigration and asylum, at the headquarters of the Commission's delegation in Cyprus, in Nicosia.
