Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will go to Cyprus after the conclusion of the European People's Party meeting in Bucharest, Romania, sources from the EPP told KYPE.
According to the same information, Mrs. von der Leyen's departure to Cyprus is expected on Thursday or Friday. The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, will also speak on Thursday at the EPP session where the Commission President's candidacy for a second term with the support of the pan-European center-right party is expected to be ratified.

In her post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Mrs. Von der Leyen said that in a telephone conversation with President Christodoulidis they discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza, while adding that the Commission will support the implementation of the maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus.

A government source had confirmed on Tuesday afternoon at KYPE that the developments are related to the US interest in the humanitarian corridor.

Meanwhile on Tuesday the website of the Israeli newspaper Maariv spoke of a decision on Thursday by the Israeli government in relation to the sea corridor.

It is recalled that on Sunday the representative of the National Security Council, John Kirby, had stated that the discussion on the transfer of humanitarian supplies to Gaza by sea is related to recent discussions on the possible use of Cyprus, although he added that the idea is at an early stage.
