The helicopter crash that claimed the lives of five members of the American special operations unit on Friday occurred 30 nautical miles from Cyprus, according to information from the Greek Ministry of Defense.

As informed by KYPE, the accident happened 30 nautical miles from Cyprus, south of Cabo Greco.

The Cypriot authorities were in constant contact with the American forces in the area, the same sources said, noting that the search and rescue operations were carried out by the American forces who were in the area at the time of the accident.

It is recalled that the European Command of the US armed forces (EUCOM) announced on Sunday that five soldiers died on Friday when their helicopter crashed in the eastern Mediterranean during a training mission. He noted that during a routine refueling mission as part of military training, a US military aircraft carrying five servicemen crashed into the Mediterranean Sea.

He also stated that search and rescue operations began immediately after the crash, while an investigation into its causes is underway.

The soldiers in the helicopter were US military special operations personnel, US officials told international media.
