The environmental cannibalism that has been observed lately in the Achnas water dam and the surrounding wetland area is causing strong protests to the visitors.
The reason is the orgy of illegal fishing by foreigners mainly and the piles of garbage they leave behind. Without being responsible for the garbage and some residents of the surrounding area who visit the water barrier for picnics and spit.
The Community Council of Achna tries from time to time to clean the area, but it seems that it is only in its effort, while at the same time it has scarce staff and resources.
The fact that due to the drought the water level in the dam is at a very low level seems to make it easier to catch fish, with the result that illegal fishermen (no one applies to the relevant government agencies for a permit) have fallen head over heels in their activity.
At the same time, residents of the forests of Achna and Avgorou Forests complain that no one in charge, ie from the Water and Fisheries or Police departments, has ever visited the dam and distributed it out of court to those who illegally fish or pollute the surrounding area.
The water block in the dead zone of occupied Achna is a popular place for walking or visiting residents of free Famagusta, while there are many tourists and school students, as there is a coffee shop and a small zoo.
Unfortunately, in recent years, due to water scarcity, water has been permanently low and the wetland has been severely damaged. However, it still hosts various birds such as ducks, caterpillars and more.
Among the suggestions that have been made from time to time regarding the protection of the dam, which is the only one in free Famagusta, is the installation of a permanent supervisor.
