Amalia Hatzigianni: "The coronavirus is still in the community"

The coronavirus is still in the community and everyone must strictly follow the decrees of the Ministry of Health, said Amalia Hatzigianni, Scientific Director of Larnaca-Famagusta General Hospitals, to KYPE, but noting that it is gratifying that elderly people are not treated.

He added that "in recent days, a large number of cases have been detected in the community and this may reflect the increase in patient admissions to hospitals in general. "It is gratifying that elderly people are not hospitalized because they have been protected by vaccinations."

He added that "regular rapid antigen detection tests help to detect positive cases in a timely manner, resulting in, when necessary, their rapid admission to public hospitals. "Vaccination on the one hand and rapid antigen detection tests on the other are considered positive elements for the community and for the fight waged by everyone against the coronavirus."

Answering a relevant question, Ms. Hatzigianni said that "the average age of patients treated at the Reference Hospital is 61 years. The youngest patient is 31 years old and the oldest, who is a woman, is 90 years old because she did not have time to be vaccinated ".

Asked to comment on the fact that lately there has been a lot of relaxation from the world, Amalia Hatzigianni said that "it is reasonable and expected that people have been tired of living for more than a year in uncertainty, lockdowns but also do not know what he will face the next day ".

However, he added, "everyone understands that the virus is among us and the occasional decrees issued by the Ministry of Health should be observed, ie to keep distances, to strictly observe personal hygiene measures while the mask should be worn where it should be. and it is needed ".

Asked whether the change in weather and the rise in temperature may lead to a reduction in positive cases in the community, he said that "perhaps with the rise in temperature the symptoms will be milder. We hope that there will be a decline in the curve of cases that have been observed recently in Cyprus, so that both the Hospitals and all the staff working in them can take a breath ".

Observing that with the arrival of Spring there are enough people who show various allergies and the specific symptoms to be perceived as coronavirus symptoms, Ms. Hatzigianni said that "people should always be in direct contact with their personal doctor, so that to receive the proper advice ".

Regarding the medical, nursing, paramedical, hourly wage and in general all the teams of the staff of the Reference Hospital, he said that "despite the fact that he has been working non-stop for more than a year and is tired, nevertheless he continues his work with the same zeal and helps patients with coronavirus ".

"All employees have shown hard work, zeal, devotion and love for their fellow human beings and for that I express my thanks and appreciation," he noted.

He added that "all the staff of the Hospital continues to work in a team and daily shows its love for the patients, taking into account that the patients consider it as a lifeline. The staff supports and assists patients at all levels, as this will hold their hand during the difficult hours of treatment, will talk to them and will generally stand by the sleepless guard until they recover and leave the Hospital.
