The White House reiterates the US government's position on the Turkish provocations in Varos, in a letter to leaders of the Greek-American community, Ryan Tally, Director of Europe and Russia at the National Security Council.

The letter, dated December 29, is a response to a letter from the leaders of the Greek Diaspora organizations, AHEPA, Pseka, AHI, the Federation of Cypriot Organizations of America and the Greek-American Leadership Council.

Mr Tali said the US government was closely monitoring the situation in Varos and had repeatedly expressed to the Turkish and "Cypriot authorities the deep concern of the United States for the reopening of Varos" and called for similar measures to be withdrawn.

"In October, Foreign Minister Pompeo spoke with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Christodoulidis, and stated that the reopening of part of Varos was provocative and incompatible with UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 and did not contribute to a return to talks. .

He added that the US government supported action by the UN Security Council and welcomed the UN Security Council's strong statement on Varosha.

He also said the United States had described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Varos in November as a step in the wrong direction.

"The United States continues to support a comprehensive settlement to reunite the island into a bi-zonal bi-communal federation. A result that will benefit all Cypriots ".

Regarding Turkey, the National Security Council official says that the US has long expressed concern about Turkey's supply of the S400 system.
