The contacts of the Municipality of Famagusta in Strasbourg regarding the issue of Famagusta were concluded on Thursday, April 18.
The delegation consisted of the Mayor, Dr. Simos Ioannou, the Deputy Mayor and representative of AKEL, Mr. Chrysanthos Zannettos, Mr. Giorgos Hatzitheodosiou, on behalf of the DISY Municipal Team and Ms. Marilena Manoli, Municipal Secretary of the Municipality of Famagusta.
The delegation of the Municipality of Famagusta met, among others, with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mr. Thodoris Rousopoulos, the General Secretary of the PACE Ms. Despina Hatzivasiliou and the rapporteur of the KSSE report on Famagusta, Piero Fascino, who presented a revised draft of his report before the political affairs committee. An in-depth discussion of the issue and the latest developments took place with Mr. Fascinos, in view of the fact that the relevant resolution will be submitted for approval before the Plenary Session of the KSSE next June.
The Delegation also had contacts with Presidents and representatives of all political groups in the CSCE, the Cypriot judge at the European Court of Human Rights, Mr. Giorgos Sergidis, as well as representatives of the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe. A meeting was also held with the President of the Council of Regions Congress, Mr. Mark Cools.
The Mayor, after informing his interlocutors about the current situation in Famagusta and the change in the status quo, asked them to mediate as far as they are concerned in order to prevent the alteration of the status quo in Famagusta on the basis of the resolutions and the defense of human rights. The unique and unchanging goal of the Municipality of Famagusta is a return to our beloved city within the framework of a comprehensive resolution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of the DDO.
