The MEPs' trip to Cyprus will finally take place on May 7-8, and on Tuesday, May 8, the visit to the occupied city of Famagusta, together with as many people as they would like to accompany them, to see for themselves the situation there.

"As MEP Takis Hatzigeorgiou stated in KYPE, nine MEPs will participate in the visit, including himself and Dimitris Papadakis. Mr. Hatzigeorgiou stated that it has not been clarified yet how far the city of Famagusta the MEPs will reach. He said that during the previous visit of MEPs, members of the Committee on Petitions, to Famagusta, which took place in 2007, the Turkish army was asked to allow them to enter the enclosed area and the answer was "a deafening silence".

Mr. Hadjigeorgiou expressed the position that there is no need for a new resolution of the European Parliament on the issue of Famagusta since the existing resolution, which was approved, is very good but to request its implementation. He also said that "we will ask for the release of funds and approval of the passage of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and foreign experts in the city."

It is noted that a resolution of the European Parliament of 22 April 2009 calls for the implementation of all parts of UN Security Council Resolution 550 on the Cyprus issue, which will lead to the full return of property to its rightful owners in Varos.

According to the preliminary program of their visit to Cyprus, MEPs will have meetings with Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis, the Municipality of Famagusta and representatives of civil society. Their visit to Famagusta will take place on the morning of Tuesday, May 8, and then they will give a press conference at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Famagusta in Deryneia.

Mr. Hatzigeorgiou said that on April 20, at 19.30 pm, a gathering is organized at the Lefkonikos association, in Larnaca, in which representatives of organizations and citizens who want to express their views can attend in order to give a boost to all , regarding this visit.

The main question is where the people who want to accompany the MEPs' visit to Famagusta will be invited to go, said Mr. Hatzigeorgiou.

He also mentioned that on May 4, a press conference will be given in Nicosia on the issue of the visit of the MEPs by himself and the Mayor of Famagusta, Alexis Galanos.
