A protest in the form of a picket outside the British Prime Minister's residence on Downing Street was organized by the Association of Famagusta of Great Britain on Tuesday afternoon.

During the rally, which was approved by the local authorities as it met the conditions for the protection of public health against the coronavirus, the President of the Association Dr. Vassilis Mavrou delivered a letter to Prime Minister Johnson requesting the intervention of the UK as a guarantor of strength in Cyprus , with the aim of ending the Turkish occupation, removing the Turkish troops and returning the refugees to their homes and properties.

Especially for the city of Famagusta, the letter called for the condemnation of Turkey for the opening of part of the enclosed city and its return to the previous situation.

The letter of Dr. Mavrou also noted that the city of Famagusta should be returned to its rightful residents, as dictated by United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Dr. Mavrou stated that "the Famagusta Association MB expresses its anger and hatred but also at the same time its great sadness that Turkey, unilaterally and in violation of the decisions of the Security Council, opened the closed area of Famagusta under Turkish Cypriot administration. "with the sad result that the houses and properties of the Famagustans were inhabited by Turks or even businesses, such as hotels, were given to foreigners who would like to invest in our stolen properties."

He condemned, he continued, "these actions which are not in line with the provisions of the UN Security Council, the EU and other organizations and create controversy and tension in the relations between the two communities. "At the same time, Ignoring the High Level Agreements between Kyprianou and Denktash and the UN Security Council resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992), which basically call on Turkey to withdraw its occupation troops."

The President of the Famagusta Association of Great Britain added that Famagusta should be given to the UN as a first step and that its legal residents should return to their homes and properties.

He added that the Association deplores plans to resettle any part of Famagusta against UN resolutions and the two communities' summit agreements, and that "there is no doubt that these actions have dealt a major blow to efforts to resume talks and at the same time undermining the peaceful settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of United Nations resolutions ".

In closing, he stated that the Famagusta Association will continue to fight for the return to the city of Evagoras and that the flag of the fight will never be submitted, until the handover of Famagusta to its legal residents.
