The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has accepted the registration for the discussion of the issue of illegal Turkish actions in the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta in violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions requested by the Member of Parliament, Nikos Tornaritis, ΚΣΣΕ.

An announcement of the Parliament states that Mr. Tornaritis participated on Monday through a teleconference, in an enlarged session of the Standing Committee of KSSE, with the participation of all the members of the Assembly which will end today.

According to the announcement, "in the context of the work of the Standing Committee, Mr. Tornaritis requested the registration for a discussion of the issue of illegal Turkish actions in the enclosed area of ​​Famagusta, in violation of the relevant resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992) of United Nations Security Council ".

Despite the objections raised by Turkish MPs, Mr. Tornaritis' request was put to a vote and accepted by an overwhelming majority. The issue of Famagusta will be discussed in the afternoon in the Standing Committee.

Nikos Tornaritis also took part in a teleconference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the EU on Monday, organized as part of the parliamentary dimension of the current German Presidency of the EU Council.

An announcement of the Parliament states that "in his speech in a debate on the issue of the European recovery, Mr. Tornaritis noted the historic decision taken at the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on July 21 for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, noting "However, this decision does not meet the ambitious goals set by the EU to achieve digital transformation and climate neutrality by 2050."

Mr Tornaritis emphasized that the planned cuts in programs such as the Green Agreement and the Digital Agenda, as well as cuts in key areas, including research and innovation, health and climate initiatives, were not in line with current and future EU commitments and priorities ".

Finally, he "expressed the hope that the agreement reached during the ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council would be improved".
