The Parliamentary Representative of the Democratic Alarm and head of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CSCE), Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, participated in a meeting of the enlarged Standing Committee, whose work was completed yesterday.

During the meeting, the issue of Famagusta was discussed, at the request of Mr. Tornaritis, who informed the members of the Assembly at length about the illegal opening by Turkey of part of the coastal front of the fenced area of ​​the occupied city.

These actions of Turkey, Mr. Tornaritis pointed out, are in complete contradiction with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992), which set the framework for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants and provide for the transfer of the region to the administration of the United Nations, as a confidence-building measure. According to the resolutions, he stressed, any attempts to settle part of the city are unacceptable and legally invalid. Mr. Tornaritis took note of the Security Council statement following an appeal by the Republic of Cyprus reaffirming previous UN resolutions on Famagusta and calling on Turkey to revoke its illegal act and avoid unilateral actions that could increase tensions in the island. . "These actions of Turkey undermine the prospects for resolving the Cyprus issue," Mr. Tornaritis said. Mr. Tornaritis stressed the escalating challenges of Turkey on the ground and the ongoing illegal activity of this country in the Cypriot EEZ, make urgent the need for a dynamic reaction of the international community, in order to prevent the deepening of the division in Cyprus and to try to peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the problem. He called on the member states of the Council of Europe to show practical solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus and to exercise their influence so that Turkey can comply with international law, abandon its unacceptable claims against Cyprus and make a positive and substantial contribution. in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.
