In no way will we believe and we will not allow interference in the conduct of justice, said today the Minister of Justice and Public Order, George Savvidis, when asked to comment on the reports of the British Foreign Secretary, on the case of the 19-year-old British report of rape.

Asked about it, on the sidelines of his presence at the Epiphany celebrations in Limassol, Mr. Savvidis said that he had been informed about the statement of the British Foreign Secretary, after a question, whether a travel directive against Cyprus would be issued.

"What I want to say is the obvious, that we are an organized state, with a constitution, with international obligations, with laws, with an independent justice for which we are proud and as a Government", said Mr. Savvidis.

He noted that "in no way will we allow and will not allow anyone to interfere or interfere in the conduct of justice, because we believe that it is a cornerstone, in a benevolent state and in a rule of law, to leave the courts untouched by all, in doing their great duty ”.

Regarding the intention to grant a pardon by the President of the Republic in case a prison sentence is imposed on the 19-year-old, the Minister of Justice replied that there are constitutional rights of the PD, "but I think that at this stage let us limit ourselves to waiting the decision of the court, which should be unquestionably left to do what it deems to be right ”.

He reiterated that he has full confidence in the Cypriot judiciary and pointed out that "any party who disagrees with any decision of a criminal court has every right to exercise the right of appeal to the Supreme Court".

Mr. Savvidis was also asked about the security measures taken due to the tense situation in the Middle East, saying that "there is a duty increase of security measures, mainly in sensitive embassies and possible targets".

At the same time, he noted that there is no specific information or specific threat against targets in Cyprus.
