A very important day for Ayia Napa, since today, September 20, the competition for the project "Restoration, Promotion and Promotion of the Medieval Monastery of Ayia Napa" was announced.

The project includes the conversion of the existing cells of the Monastery located on the north and east side along the solar to Museum Areas, which are known to exhibit important ecclesiastical findings, part of the collection of Archbishop Makarios III and icons of the Metropolitan Region Famagusta.

At the same time, the project includes renovations, the construction of a new building and shelter, the creation of office space, a refreshment room, auxiliary spaces and sanitary facilities. Finally, it is planned to upgrade the open space of the inner courtyard of the Monastery.

The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Giannis Karousos stressed for this important development:

"Today is a very important day for our Municipality, as the first and largest renovation project for our center and the north side is underway. This is the result of an effort, which began in 2014 with the designation of our city as an "Urban Center" and the provision of funding for three important projects. The Medieval Monastery, the renovation of Tefkrou Anthia and Giannaki Pappouli streets, and the multi-functional theme park. The renovation of the degraded north side and the center of the Municipality begins through this project. By the end of the year, we will announce the renovation and upgrade of Giannaki Pappouli and Tefkrou Anthia streets and in 2019 the multi-functional theme park. I would like to thank the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, because without the initiative of characterizing the Municipality as an urban center, we could not implement any project for the center ".

After the bidder is confirmed, it is expected that the works will start before the end of the year and will be completed in December 2019. The cost of the project is estimated at 1.3 million euros plus VAT.

The Metropolitan of Constantia, Famagusta, Mr. Vassilios, was particularly pleased with the current development and the efforts, which began with the establishment of the Diocese 10 years ago:

"The ancient Monastery of Ayia Napa is one of the most important monuments that connect the history of the place and the culture from the Latin period during which the monastery was built. Of course, this does not mean that it is limited to this period, because Ayia Napa was previously a pilgrimage and during the tradition, the icon of the Virgin of Ayia Napa was found in the cave. The goal we set as a Diocese was the promotion of the Monastery as a monument, but of course its restoration, so that it has the spiritual dimension of the past. The fact that it functioned as a Monastery, we must not forget because it is located in a tourist environment. We set as our goals the creation of the museum and, as the Mayor has mentioned, the establishment of a postgraduate institute. In order to become a postgraduate institute for the study of the history of Hagiology of our place and of the cultures of the Middle East, a library is also needed. This will create a library, where there will be conference space. Also events and activities such as the Cultural Academy Agios Epifanios with publications and conferences highlight the Monastery, its history and culture to the many visitors of the free province of Famagusta. I wish the project to be completed soon and to be available to visitors ".

The project was selected and funded based on the proposals and decisions of the Municipality of Ayia Napa for sustainable urban development, following the decision of the Council of Ministers in May 2014 to temporarily designate the Municipalities of Ayia Napa and Paralimni as "Urban Center". Funding has been provided by the Directorate of European Programs, Coordination and Development (EPSA).
