The Municipality of Ayia Napa wants to turn the space where the broadcast antennas in Cape Greco are located into a Museum Cultural Park.
According to Mayor Christos Zannettou, he recently visited the area of Cape Greco "where there are antennas, known in the area as antennas of the French, the lighthouse and the building with the radio communication facilities, the operation of which was fully terminated two years ago. The area now belongs to the Republic of Cyprus and the demolition of the antennas and the removal of the radio communication facilities will begin very soon ".
He added that "in a recent letter to the President of the Republic and the relevant Services, the Municipality of Ayia Napa submitted a request so that with the cooperation of all relevant departments of the government, to take the necessary actions to highlight the lighthouse and the environmental and aesthetic upgrade the area. We know that the lighthouse, apart from the care of the smooth navigation, was also the "informal" eyes of other Services such as the Department of Customs, Thera and the Police, it is a historical place but also a point of strategic importance, since it is located at the easternmost tip of Europe ".
Our goal continued Mr. Zannettou "is to turn this historic area into an important reference point not only for Ayia Napa but also for the entire free province of Famagusta, creating a Museum Cultural Park. In the building where the radiocommunication facilities were housed, the Municipality intends to create a thematic Museum, which can be visited by thousands of visitors, foreigners and locals, with multiple benefits to our national economy ".
Answering a relevant question, the Mayor of Ayia Napa said that "Cape Greco is the easternmost point of Europe, which has unique beauties. The first sunrise in Europe takes place in this area and in the year 2000, with the change of the century, Cape Greco was flooded by thousands of tourists who had celebrated the first spectacular sunrise for the 21st century ".
He also explained that "the area of Cape Greco is about 385 hectares and belongs to the NATURA 2000 area. This lighthouse is one of the four built in Cyprus, around the 19th century that guided sailors at sea and is a landmark," he said. He noted that the other three lighthouses in free Cyprus are located at Cape Kiti in Larnaca, Cape Gata in Limassol and Paphos.
According to the Mayor of Ayia Napa, "the radio communication facilities in Cape Greco hosted an American and a French high-power radio station in the middle waves, with a broadcast direction to the Middle East. The two stations have been in use since the 70s, "he said, adding that" with the closure of their operation, the way was opened for their demolition, solving a long-standing problem faced by the residents of the area, both with the visual pollution and with the consequences. that existed in public health ".
