"Deryneia is suffocating with the roadblock, so we will ask for permission from the UN and the competent Ministry of Defense to use this part of the dead zone for agricultural / livestock purposes but also for residential needs," Mayor Deryne told POLITIS 107.6. Karagiannis regarding the opening of a roadblock in Deryneia.
He added that the district council has taken the decision and will address the United Nations, noting that the UN is positive if the occupying army does not react.
Mr. Karagiannis expressed his disappointment since, as he said, the authorities agreed in 2015 to open the roadblock.
"The works are continuing at a slow pace, but nothing has been done inside the dead zone and we have no information about what will happen. The Turkish outpost for which there is a political decision based on which he had to move is still there in the area of Agios Memnon. 2,5 years have passed and we are still waiting to find out what will happen and if the roadblock will be opened ".
He continued by emphasizing that: "We are 2 months before the elections and we must all be careful in what we say because some people are offended. People ask every day, what will happen to the roadblock, as a local government we are in a difficult position since we ourselves do not know what to answer. Normally people wonder what is going on. "Many are disappointed but others are also fascinated."
Finally, the Mayor expressed the hope that the stakeholders will show understanding.
