SKIN: The immediate need to create a Green Point

Green Point Andros Karagiannis, Green Point, Ministry of Agriculture

The request for the creation of a Green Point is restored by the Municipality of Deryneia in a very strong way. The mayor Andros Karagiannis sent a new letter to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Costas Kadis, a few days ago, reiterating for the umpteenth time in recent years that the creation of a Green Point is an urgent and urgent need.

As he mentions, the reactions from citizens are constantly intensifying for the lack of a place for dumping pruning and bulky waste (old furniture, etc.). This gap creates a lot of clutter problems from the uncontrolled dumping of this type of waste in the open. Most of all, however, there is a serious problem with the dead zone, where unfortunately unconscious citizens throw rubbish. The inability to clean the dead zone in combination with the uncontrolled dumping of waste increases the risk of fires, which are already a common phenomenon, in addition to the obvious burden on the natural environment. All this, as the mayor of Deryneia Andros Karagiannis stated in "X", not only proves how urgent the issue of creating a Green Point is, but also confirms the position that remote areas should enjoy first priority when making plans to create such spaces.

All Green Points are closed after the termination of the contract

Meanwhile, the problem of pruning management and generally waste that can only be disposed of in Green Points is expected to take on dramatic proportions after the termination of the management contract of the seven Green Points of Larnaca and Famagusta provinces.

On July 12, 2019, the Larnaca - Famagusta Household Waste Disposal Site Exploitation Council sent a letter to the municipalities and communities of the two provinces informing that the Council has terminated the contract with the contractor consortium UCC United Cleaning (Cyprus) Ltd N Cyprus and Titan BKS Ltd concerning the management of six landlines and a mobile green dot.

The 10-year contract was signed in May 2018 and management began in July 2018, however a year later the Board terminated the contract by attributing inconsistency to the contractor. The president of the Council, the mayor of Aradippou, Evangelos Evangelidis, publicly complained that the contractor left the Green Points to be turned into garbage dumps.

These spaces were created in Aradippou, Athienou, Dromolaxia, Anafotia, Kofinou and Pyrga, while a car, type Lorry Tipper, with a crane, was agreed to operate as a mobile Green Point.

In his letter to the Local Authorities of Larnaca and Famagusta provinces, the chairman of the Larnaca - Famagusta Household Waste Disposal Utilization Council reveals that the contractor refuses to hand over the facilities to the Council after the termination of the contract! Therefore, as Mr. Evangelidis notes, all Green Points will remain closed indefinitely until the dispute is resolved.

In statements made a month ago, E. Evangelidis stated that the municipalities and communities of Larnaca province faced huge problems with the way the contractor who has taken over the Green Points manages the recyclable materials, since they have become garbage dumps. "After several warnings were given, seeing his non-response to the remarks made to him on the matter and after several meetings of the Council, it was decided that the contractor would hand over the keys. However, this did not happen and so the Council decided to terminate his contract and in case he does not comply, then we are determined to go to court ", said the mayor of Aradippou.
