"Rain" has been the complaints over the last few days about reduced or even no - in some cases - water supply to properties in the tourist areas of the free province of Famagusta, and specifically in Paralimni and Αγία Νάπα.

The problem, according to statements given to the Phileleftheros newspaper by Mayor of Paralimni Mr. Theodoros Pyrillis, refers to the fact that "the central pipeline channels 36,000 m³ to the free Famagusta and the needs are about 42,000 m³ of water". The Mayor of Paralimni pointed out that "essentially, the previous Government left the free province of Famagusta without water. The pipes were bought, the new pipeline from the Decelia desalination plant to the area's reservoirs had to be completed two years ago, which has not been done. If this project, which has been announced since 2017, is done, all the problems would be solved."

Regarding the problem that would arise during the period of August 28th due to the increased number of visitors to the area, the Mayor of Paralimni warned from July XNUMX, in his intervention on the Vergina TV show "The Reason to the Citizen".

In Paralimni the biggest problem occurred in the areas of Kapparis, Agia Triada and Pernera, in which this week the occupancy reached 100% and two breakdowns led to households being left without water supply, while due to the fact that in the areas of Kapparis, Pernera and Agia Triada -unlike Ayia Napa- most visitors are Cypriots, many complaints were registered to the local authority. As mentioned by Mayor of Paralimni in his statements, "on the fifteenth of August crews with workers from the Municipality of Paralimni worked feverishly to fix the damage and on Wednesday the water was cut off. As the Municipality of Paralimni we did all the actions in the previous years, we found agricultural perforations and solved problems. However, if the announced project is not done, in the coming years the problem will grow".

In fact, the Mayor's intervention was followed by an announcement Tourist Commercial Industrial Company of Famagusta (TEBEA), in which the issue was highlighted and the strong concern of the organization was expressed.

The reference in the TEVEA announcement is the same

"Regarding the problem raised by the Mayor of Paralimni and regarding the interruption/reduced water supply that has been observed in the last few days in Paralimni and Protaras, as TEBEA we express our strong concern for the effects that the reduced water flow will have on both the quality of life of the residents of the area as well as the quality of the tourist product offered, as the days of August 2019th approach, with thousands of local and foreign tourists visiting the area and the need for water multiplying. We consider unacceptable the obstruction that the competent government agencies have shown for so many years in the planning and implementation of the project of the new pipeline in Kokkinokremmos, despite the assurances we had since XNUMX that it would start. A project that, if completed, would have definitively solved the problem of water supply in the area"

The Municipality of Paralimni, with yesterday's announcement, stated that it proceeded to repair the damage to the pipeline, so that water can be supplied to all buildings without interruption, while the same thing happened in Ayia Napa.
