This morning, parents and local authorities of the High School of Peace and Eleftheria Deryneia - Sotira protested after seven students of the Classics and Foreign Languages departments, due to a reduced number of students, are forced to either change direction or be transferred to another school.
The Mayor of Deryneia Andros Karagiannis and Sotira Giorgos Takkas together with the parents gathered this morning at the school to discuss the main issue.
The local authorities warn that they will not tolerate students leaving the school and finishing their education in other neighboring schools pointing out that the children are not second class.
Mr. Karagiannis stated that "we as local authorities as well as the parents consider it unacceptable that our children are forced to change their field after they have started their studies in the specific branches because the children have already planned their studies and we must not kill the dreams of students".
He added that "the local authorities, both the Municipality of Sotiras and the Municipality of Deryneia, had approved the creation of a High School and a High School in Deryneia so that the children would start their studies from the first year of high school and finish in the third year of high school. It is not allowed for children to be forced to change schools in the middle of their studies in the first or second grade of high school."
Parents and Local Authorities are calling on the Ministry of Education to find ways and solutions so that students remain in their school environment until the end of their studies.
The Mayor of Deryneia calls on the Ministry of Education to appoint teachers if there are none in the specific branches.
Please note that Andros Karagiannis is talking about housing a University branch in the area of the Lyceum of Deryneia and Sotiras as the province of Famagusta is the only province that does not have a university.
