The desalinated water is causing serious problems, mainly corrosion, as was mentioned today at the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, with the competent departments proceeding with controls and taking measures.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Andros Kafkalias, "today we discussed the problems caused by desalinated water, water quality, piping and solar water heating systems."

The discussion, he continued, focused mainly on the Province of Famagusta, where the general finding is that there are serious problems in water corrosion, a fact that was recognized by the competent department, the Department of Water Development (WDD).

"As we were informed by the WDD, since the last time we discussed the issue three months ago in the Committee on Agriculture, it has taken some immediate measures, as it characterized them, in cooperation with the contractor of the desalination group of Dhekelia, for partial mitigation of the problem ", he added.

At the same time, according to Mr. Kafkalias, the WDD stated that it is studying long-term measures, which are necessary and must be taken to reach the desired water quality levels.

Concerns in the Agriculture Committee, he pointed out, were caused by the reports of the President of the Community Council of Ormidia, about the quality of the water received by the area, about the effects on the sea, the fisheries sector and the condition of the water pipelines.

The Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture asked the WDD, the Health Services and the State Chemist to intensify the controls and to inform about the results, said Andros Kafkalias, adding that "awaiting the results, the Commission will return to the issue in a short time. period for reassessment of the situation ".

In addition, he concluded in his statement, the Committee today started the article-by-article discussion of the bill and the regulations for the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (KOAP) and continued the discussion of the bills and regulations for the Cereals Committee.
