Hotels in the free province of Famagusta are joining forces to reduce the consumption of disposable plastics and for this issue an online workshop of the project "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free" was held on Thursday, February 25th.

A written announcement of the Project states that "the workshop presented the challenges faced by the hotel sector in reducing the consumption of disposable plastics, but also simple practices that can be applied by each hotel to reduce them. The workshop was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, PASYXE Famagusta and PASYDIXE and was attended by more than 40 hotels and representatives of the Ministry of Tourism, PASYXE, PASYDIXE, the Commissioner for Environment, the University of Nicosia and others.

It is added that "the workshop was designed to support hotels, so that they have a smoother transition to the gradual reduction of consumption of disposable plastics, which begins in Cyprus from July 3, 2021. The workshop was addressed to all hotels in the province of Famagusta , area where the actions of the Project "Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free" are implemented ".

A representative of Travel Without Plastic "presented solutions applied to various hotel companies both abroad and in Cyprus, which in addition to protecting the environment, help hotels to have financial benefits and improve their customer satisfaction, promoting a more environmental policy. It is noted that a large portion of visitors complain on the internet about the excessive use of plastic by hotel units ".

According to the announcement, "Jo Hendrickx from Travel Without Plastic said that hotels that achieve the reduction of disposable plastic have a lot in common, perhaps most importantly their clear vision of what they want to achieve and that they encourage their staff. , but also their visitors to take action and be part of the solution ".

On behalf of the hotels "Nikos Kleftis from the Louis Althea Beach Hotel stated that" the workshop was very constructive and offered the employees in the field a variety of practical examples that can be applied in any hotel. It is now up to each of us to reconsider our choices and actions. "

Besides, "Elli Papapetrou from Altantica Sancta Napa said that it is amazing how many hotels attended this initiative". Let us offer our team the appropriate training and supplies to understand the benefits of this process, he said and noted that "with pioneering ideas and consistency we can all achieve the desired result in reducing the consumption of disposable plastics."

It is noted that the Keep our Sand and Sea Plastic Free Project is an initiative of the TUI Care Foundation, in collaboration with the Travel Foundation and the Cyprus Association for Sustainable Tourism (CSTI) and aims to reduce the consumption of disposable plastics in the tourism industry of Famagusta.
