A new special unit to detect illegal immigrant trafficking rings was established by the Police last month.

The newly established Illegal Immigrant Trafficking Squad is staffed with experienced investigators, well-versed in investigating cases related to illegal immigration, as well as issues related to the Department of Aliens and Immigration.

The Spokesman of the Police, Christos Andreou, speaking on the show "Mesimeri and Something", said that the specific department was established last month, it collects and evaluates information that reaches the Police from various sources, whether it concerns irregular immigrants arriving in Cyprus and are interrogated upon their arrival, or arise from the monitoring and supervision of cases being investigated, concerning persons arrested as traffickers.

According to Mr. Andreou, the special unit has already proceeded to the arrest of four persons, against whom trafficking of immigrants is being investigated.

Mr. Andreou also referred to the operation carried out over the weekend in Larnaca, Paphos and Nicosia, which resulted in the arrest of fourteen persons who were illegally residing in Cyprus.
