A decision for a single Municipality in the province of Famagusta was taken by the Community Council of Frenaro in its recent Session. The decision was overwhelming, with five votes in favor and two abstentions, and provides for the unification of all four municipalities and five communities in the free province into a single local government.

A statement issued by the Frenaru Community Council said that a plenary session was convened on December 5 to study the issue of local government reform only following the announcement by the outgoing Interior Minister last week.

As mentioned, after intense reflection, constructive discussion and after all the members have been placed, the following were decided by a majority:

  1. The Community Council disagrees with the proposal / suggestion of the Ministry of Interior for the creation of two Municipalities in the free province of Famagusta.
  2. The clear position of the Council is the creation of a Municipality that will include all the municipalities and communities of the free province of Famagusta.

Based on this position, it is reported that the Community Council of Frenarus sends a message of unity, far from personal ambitions, petty partisan expediencies and localist approaches. There is a clear concern that the creation of two Municipalities will lead to the establishment of local authorities of two speeds with serious substantial discrepancies such as economic adequacy, development prospects, quality of services provided, etc.. An announcement of a single Municipality, with common complex services, can lead to the balanced development and progress of the entire province of Famagusta for the benefit of all, regardless of its inhabitants.

The announcement goes on to say that "Especially the semi-occupied province of Famagusta, in addition to national reasons, should be led united and not" again "divided into the much-coveted local government reform, while concluding by saying that diversification for the good of our province. ”

The decision of the Frenarus Community Council will also be sent by letter to the Minister of the Interior for the inclusion of the scenario in the proposed bill.
