The people of Famagusta expressed their anxiety about the stagnation in the Cyprus issue and the return of the city of Famagusta on Tuesday, at an event organized by the Municipality of the occupied city, in Limassol, with Mayor Alexis Galanos stating that "it is time to` let the voice of the refugee world be heard and let us stand tall ”.

The event, entitled "45 years with the keys to our homes in hand - It is enough to be second class citizens" is a continuation of the mobilizations recently announced by the Municipal Council of Famagusta for joint actions by occupied municipalities and communities, with the aim of claiming the rights and entitlements of refugees to return.

In his speech, Mr. Galanos stated that "for us one is our party tonight, a big party called Cyprus" and wondered if everyone has a clear conscience that they did what had to be done for so many years "to move forward, for to put Turkey in the dock ". Have we, he continued, taken the necessary steps to implement Security Council resolutions 550 and 789? he wondered.

Pointing out that in recent efforts in international steps to restore the issue of Famagusta, the answer was that the Cyprus issue was resolved and the time to return is coming, Alexis Galanos said that developments show that "something is wrong, somewhere there was a mockery."

"Suddenly we were faced with a major impasse and faced with Turkish plans to settle Famagusta in the very near future, things that are already being discussed in various diplomatic circles," he added.

He wondered whether we should raise our hands and say that everything is over "or we should all undertake a campaign and give a message that there are no two worlds in Cyprus, that there are no people who party, who have a good time , who is in bliss, while another world still mourns its lost homes, its children, its life, its lost opportunities ”.

The Mayor of Famagusta stressed that it is time to rise to the occasion and to hear the voice of the refugee world, regarding the claim of its rights.

"Famagusta is ahead, next to us the other occupied Municipalities and communities, the common goal is the same, Cyprus is one and as one we must see it, we can not divide it into two", he said, noting that any thought of division of Cyprus "eats the soul of a refugee".

This was followed by a dialogue with the public, which raised its concerns and thoughts about the developments in the Cyprus issue, as well as proposals around the action plan that the Municipality of Famagusta began to implement.
