The alternate election pursuant to the above paragraph shall be held within a period of forty-five days from the date the position becomes vacant and on a date set by the Minister. ” At present, the position of Common Leader is filled by the Deputy Common Leader until the announcement of elections.

At the same time, the legislation states that "In the event that the post of community leader becomes vacant during the last year of the term of office of the outgoing community leader, no alternate election shall be held and the deputy mayor shall assume the duties of community leader for the remainder of the term of office of the Council."

Nevertheless, according to a communication that the Famagusta.News with the Prefect of Famagusta Georgios Chrysafinis, the by-elections are expected to be announced normally, since the last term of office of this Council is set from 31 December 2020.

The Prefect of Famagusta also mentioned in Famagusta.News that the announcement by the Minister of Interior Nikos Nouris for by-elections, which is expected to take place around the end of January, is expected to be published within days, depending on the measures that will be in place to stop the pandemic.

On the other hand, it is up to the Community Council and the party associations to decide whether to run for office or whether there will be a unanimous proposal to fill the post until the local elections, which, it is worth noting, have not clarified whether will be held normally in 2021 or if an extension will be given in case of approval of the bill for local government reform.
