The District Court of Famagusta today issued an eight-day detention order against a 33-year-old man, a resident of the free province of Famagusta, to facilitate the Police's investigations regarding the investigation of the discovery of 22 kg of cannabis, a loaded pistol, a shotgun and cartridges at his home. .

As Stelios Sergidis, YCAN press representative, reported to KYPE, "in the context of investigating a case of locating and confiscating 32 kilograms of cannabis in July in Limassol, members of the Anti-Narcotics Service conducted today, based on a court warrant, a search of a rural residence in Liopetri".

He added that "during the search of the home, owned by a 33-year-old man, a loaded handgun with eight full rounds of ammunition, a shotgun, as well as 61 full shotgun rounds were found. Also, in an auxiliary ventilation shaft, which adjoins the outside of the house, 39 nylon packages were found, which contained approximately 22 kilograms of cannabis.

In response to a related question, Mr. Sergidis said that "it appears that this is an organized group of a drug trafficking and trading ring in the Cypriot market. At the moment, YKAN is examining both cases, namely the one with the 32 kg of cannabis in Limassol and the 22 kg in Liopetri, in order to see if there are other members in this group."

Still, the investigators of the case are "examining where the drugs came from and possible collaborators of the arrested both abroad and in Cyprus. It seems that the two cases are connected and from the investigations that are being carried out we are expected to see what role each person played in the specific group, in order to proceed with the investigation of the case".

According to YCAN's press representative "the two people are known to YCAN". He also said that these are large quantities seized and "the aim of the Service is to be able to seize large quantities of narcotics before they are placed on the market. At the same time, our goal is to arrest the people who traffic and trade in drugs and to bring them to justice."

To another question, Mr. Sergidis replied that "up until yesterday, for 2023, more than 431 kilograms of cannabis have been identified and seized, which is the largest amount in recent years."

As for the 33-year-old, he said that he was brought before the District Court of Famagusta which issued a detention order against him for eight days. "The 33-year-old is being investigated for illegal possession of a handgun, illegal possession of an IED, illegal possession of explosives, illegal possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply to another person, illegal possession and supply of drugs by another person and conspiracy to commit a felony," he said. .

YKAN (Famagusta Ladder) continues the examinations.
