The delays in the Liopetriou River project are endless. The community of Liopetriou, the fishermen and the managers of the restaurants feel anger and anger at the delay of the big project.
The project started in October 2020 and was to be completed in March 2023. A first extension was given to November 2023 and a second to April 2024.
The project today has stopped as no one is working at the site.
The Minister of Agriculture Petros Xenophontos will inspect the project closely and will meet with the community leader of Liopetri Mr. Vasso Manolis and the fishermen on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at noon to discuss the problems.
The community leader of Liopetrios Vassos Manolis reported to Famagusta.News that the project was stopped because there are problems with the contractor and that tenders will have to be re-announced.
"The Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of the Interior together with the contractor and Urban Planning should find the problems that exist and the project should be finished."
Mr. Manoli pointed out the problems faced by the fishermen while he mentioned that one restaurant has been closed for 1 month and the two families are losing their income.
"The problems that the fishermen are facing is that they left the Liopetriou river one by one in order for the project to proceed. Others went to Ayia Napa while others to Xylofagos. The fishermen were patient for many years and took out their boats until the work was finished. But now the fishermen broke out and want to go down in protest, to close the roads because the project is not progressing".
The community leader added that the river of Liopetriou is now a jewel but the area is a desert since there are no roads but potholes with cars unable to cross the road.
Mr. Manolis said that at this stage the fishermen should be relieved, an infrastructure should be made so that they can go back until the project starts again and the road is fixed.
