This year marks the 100th anniversary of the tragic event of drowning in the Liopetri River, during which 25 people from Liopetri, Xylofagou and Avgorou lost their lives on the day of the celebration of the Flood.
The tragic drowning
On the Monday of the Flood of 1919, residents of Liopetri, Avgoros and Xylofagos gathered on the Liopetri River to celebrate the day. As part of the celebrations, they also boated. One of the boats, however, capsized and fatality occurred.
Scenes of ancient tragedy unfolded as parents mourned their children, wives mourned their wives and others mourned their wives and children. The beach, which just before was full of life, songs, dances and happy voices, as soon as the evil happened, filled the dead bodies of unsuspecting women, young people and children. Joy and rejoicing turned into crying, mourning and doom.
Among the drowned were the sixteen-year-old Vasilou and the fourteen-year-old sister of Kyriakos, daughters of Georgios Kotrofos from Liopetri and Paraskevi - "Pareoula".

When the unfortunate father saw the dead bodies of his daughters, he mourned them with a heavy, painful mourning, with a heavy mourning melody, which in the following years became known as the "crumbling liopetritissa voice".
