The owners of the properties of Lake Paralimni have appealed to the Court to determine the fair amount of compensation for the expropriation of their properties.

On February 28, 2014, the Republic of Cyprus published a Decree revoking the expropriation of the properties of Lake Paralimni.

The owners of the properties of Lake Paralimni at that time, represented by the lawyer Mr. Michalis Deilinos, appealed to the District Court of Famagusta to determine the fair amount of compensation for the seizure of their properties. Until then, the Republic of Cyprus had not offered any amount of compensation to the owners for the three-year period of ordering their properties.

Following the registration of the case in the Court, the Famagusta District Land Registry assessed the rental value of the properties that had been ordered and offered to the owners €1 for each 1.000 sm.. In other words, he offered them €1.900 for the ordering of an area of 1.900.000 sq.m.

The President of the Famagusta District Court who heard the case, after a hearing, awarded the owners of Lake Paralimni who appealed to the Court, the total amount of €380.000, as the fair amount of compensation for the order of their real estate.

This is the first case that was heard in the Cypriot Courts and concerned exclusively the determination of the amount of compensation for the seizure of real estate.

The Attorney General of the Republic has appealed the decision of the District Court of Famagusta.

Mr. Deilinos stated that the Department of Lands and Surveys should begin to treat more fairly the property owners whose real estate is affected. For example, when an Enforcement Order is published, an offer should be sent to the owners of the properties whose property is affected, as is the case when an Expropriation Order is published, something that the Land Registry Department does not do ".
