A flamingo was spotted by the non-governmental organization BirdLife Cyprus in Lake Paralimni on Friday (22/1).

The post of the organization as it is:

«Last Friday, during recordings at Lake Paralimni, we spotted a wounded Flamingo inside the lake. After consultation with the Hunting and Fauna Service, we managed to rescue the bird and take it to a specialized veterinarian. The x-ray showed what we suspected… shrapnel in the leg, wing and eye. Another Flamingo with an injured wing was found in the lake, but unfortunately so far it has not been possible to save it. The bird we managed to rescue received the necessary care, while surgery was also performed to treat the multiple fractures caused by the shot to the wing. Flamingo is now recovering at the Wildlife Treatment Center of the FP, but the shot and the damage he caused have cost the bird his left eye, as well as his freedom, as the wing has been irreparably injured. Although a Natura 2000 site, Lake Paralimni is a degraded area suffering from severe nuisance, lack of effective protection and proper management. "If the shooting of a Flamingo is not enough to alarm local authorities, departments, services and others about the situation, then we deserve our fate."
