A great conversation has opened in the last few days about the danger in case of a fire on the beach of Konnos in Protaras, after the catastrophic fire in Mati, Attica.

It is reminded that last week the mayor of Paralimni with his statements to the media, sounded the alarm for the situation, as he stressed that this beach is high risk due to the dense vegetation and the absence of adequate exits from the area.

Today, only a narrow road is used to access the beach, at the edges of which bathers park their cars, which makes it extremely difficult for fire trucks to pass.

For this reason, the mayor of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrillis, proposed, among other things, the opening of a second road for the smooth passage of vehicles.

However, in a statement, the Movement of Ecologists and Citizens' Cooperation claims that the municipality of Paralimni bears enormous responsibilities for the current situation in the area of Konnos, pointing out that instead of insisting on opening a second road, they should take action to close the existing one. .

The mayor even vaguely accuses the "environmentalists" in an act of pure revanchism that they oppose fire safety projects. "Nothing more untrue", the Ecologists note in their announcement.

They call on the mayor to take a position on the proposal of the Department of Forests to ban the use of the road.

"If the mayor thinks that in case of fire a narrow street will withstand the panic of hundreds of cars, it is untrue. "If the mayor thinks a cable car will withstand the pressure of thousands of people who want to leave the beach in the event of a fire, it is also unrealistic," the statement added.

Going one step further, the Ecologists accuse the mayor of exploiting the popular feeling.

"They come very boldly afterwards, expressing their concern lest we experience another fiery catastrophe like the one in Attica, and taking advantage of the social feeling, they ask for the opening of a second road. And that's because; To accommodate even more cars with even more visitors. "When they made the decision to open the road for vehicles, they knew very well that the area was forested and pine-covered."

Finally, the Ecologists propose the closure of the existing road. "We therefore agree with the concerns of the municipal authorities and believe that all safety measures must be ensured immediately. To resolve this, we propose the immediate closure of the road. Visitors should go to the bay of the beach on foot, as is the case with many beaches ".
