The fullness of the General Hospital of Famagusta, which operates as a Reference Hospital for patients with coronavirus, has reached 100%, since today 75 patients are being treated.

As Amalia Hatzigianni, Scientific Director of the Larnaca-Famagusta General Hospitals, told KYPE, "75 patients are currently being treated at the Reference Hospital, 9 of whom are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as they need closer monitoring. Also, three patients are intubated, while the Hospital has reached 100% of its fullness ".

He added that "the youngest patient is 23 years old and the oldest is 90, with the average age of patients being 59 years. "Of the patients treated at the hospital, only eight have been vaccinated."

Answering a relevant question, Ms. Hatzigianni said that "during this period, the data of the patients who are treated in the Hospital have changed somewhat, since mainly people aged between 50 and 70 are treated. "Also at this time patients are suffering from severe pneumonia, while the deterioration of their respiratory function is rapid, resulting in many people being led to intubation."

He also explained that "while patients are in good health, they suddenly need a high concentration of oxygen and almost every day a person needs intubation. The disease is progressing rapidly with the result that many patients are led to intubation and consequently to increase the hospitalizations in the Intensive Care Units ".

To another question, the Scientific Director of the General Hospitals of Larnaca - Famagusta answered that "there is also the phenomenon that people who have not been vaccinated end up in intubation. "Everyone should seize the opportunity with the operation of the Walk-In Vaccination Centers to be vaccinated, since they can simply go to the Center without having to make an appointment in advance."

He also noted that "among the patients treated at the Reference Hospital are tourists. At the same time, the Eden Rehabilitation Center in Tersefanou is hosting 98 people, who will remain until their complete negativity ".

Ms. Hatzigianni also said that "the behavior of the disease does not differ depending on the age, ie there is no difference whether the patient is young or older. "Even the Delta mutation has a higher risk of disease and transmission, while the only protection remains vaccination and adherence to the measures."
