Joseph Cassius
Dr. Iosif Kasios was born in Trachona, Nicosia province, in 1948. After his military service, as a probationary officer, he studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, from where he graduated in the summer of 1973. After graduation he worked until the end. 1973 at the General State Hospital of Athens as an internal physician in Pathology and Nephrology. In January 1974 he went to England for postgraduate studies.

From May 1974 until the end of 1978 he worked in various hospitals in England. He initially worked for a year as an internal surgeon in surgery and pathology, and a few months later was appointed full director of pathology and diabetes at Mansfield General Hospital and Kings Mill Hospital in Nottingham. During his tenure as curator he worked closely with the Kings College Hospital Diabetes Clinic in London and Nottingham Medical School.

He holds a specialty in Pathology and a Certificate of specialization in diabetes. Dr. Cassius is a member of various scientific societies, such as the European Society for the Study of Diabetes, the International Diabetes Organization, the Pancyprian Diabetes Association, and the British Diabetes Association. He has been the President of the Cyprus Diabetes Association for two consecutive terms, the Chairman of the Coordinating Committee for Diabetes Awareness, a member of the Disciplinary Board of Physicians for twelve years. In 1993, following a decision of the Greek Government, he was appointed a member of the international scientific council of the National Center for Diabetes Research, Prevention and Treatment and in 2007 a member of the Cyprus National Diabetes Committee following a decision of the Council of Ministers. He is one of the pioneers for the establishment of the Greek Cypriot Diabetes Days. In recent years he has been President of the Medic Alert Foundation.

Dr. Cassius has taken part in various research projects. As a representative of Cyprus in the European Union, he took part in the Cost Action b17 program for the study of insulin resistance in obesity and diabetes mellitus in the elderly, in the European study for the assessment of diabetes at home, in epidemiology of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and the study on the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in adolescence in Cyprus. Almost every year he takes part in various international conferences.

For his diverse activities in diabetes he has been honored both in Greece and in Cyprus, by the Pancyprian Diabetes Association, the Cyprus Diabetes Association, the Hellenic Diabetes Association, the Diabetes Association of Greece and various other cultural institutions.

Dr. Kasios has been practicing Medicine in Cyprus since January 1979, is married to Leah and has two daughters and two grandchildren.
