MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis called on Turkey immediately for a dialogue for the surrender of the city of Famagusta, while he stressed that the dialogue has a specific issue and that concerns the return of the ghost town of Famagusta. He pointed out that such a dialogue could help strengthen the credibility of the countries of the Mediterranean Forum.

Mr. Hatzigiannis was speaking at a discussion of the 16th Autumn Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE CS).

Regarding the Cyprus problem, Mr. Hatzigiannis said that it remains unresolved for 43 years, while the recent negotiations did not have a positive result, blaming Turkey for this and reminding that it maintains occupying troops in Cyprus and illegally holds almost 40 % of soil.

Stressing the need to build trust among those involved, he called on Turkey to engage in dialogue for the return of the besieged city of Famagusta and for the restoration of the human rights of its legal residents as provided for in UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 and as a measure.

This, as he said, would lead to the alleviation of the fear that the Cypriot people have and which fear was created after the actions of the past. He pointed out that the alleviation of this fear is the one that will make possible the acceptance of the solution to the Cyprus problem.

The Cypriot MP stressed that with the surrender of Famagusta, the wider Mediterranean region would receive the message of peace for the other ongoing conflicts, while he stressed that stronger and more effective preventive involvement of the OSCE is needed, instead of its relatively incomplete and delayed activity. with conflicts in the area.

Stressing the differences between the crisis in the Middle East and the conflicts in the Mediterranean, Mr. Hatzigiannis specifically mentioned the need to facilitate the start of dialogue, the need for the OSCE Joint Chiefs of Staff to appoint further Special Representatives for the region, and the need to facilitate dialogue. and in the case of the opening of the city of Famagusta.

Mr. Hatzigiannis finally requested the start of an inter-parliamentary dialogue on the issue of the return of the city of Famagusta.
