The Salamis Free University of Famagusta will be transferred to the old Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior next Saturday, April 16, for its 7th lecture in a row.

The lecture will be dedicated to the Church and speakers will be Mr. George Filotheou from the Department of Antiquities and Mrs. Maria Parani, Associate Professor of Byzantine Archeology and Art History at the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Cyprus.

Theme of the lecture: “The early Christian basilicas in Cyprus. Excavations in the Basilica of the Savior of Famagusta ".

George Filotheou
Mr. George Filotheou is the First Archaeological Officer of the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus. He served at the National Research Foundation of Greece and at the Archaeological Service of the Ministry of Culture of Greece. He worked as the person in charge of the formation of the Icon Office of the Holy Monasteries of Ioannis Lampadistis in Kalopanagiotis and the Holy Cross in Omodos. He has made a significant number of scientific papers in national and international conferences.



Associate Professor Maria Parani
Prof. Maria Parani is an Associate Professor at the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Cyprus. He studied at the University of Athens (Bachelor of History and Archeology, Archeology and Art History, 1991) and postgraduate studies at University College London (MA Archeology 1993) and at the University of Oxford (D.Phil. Byzantine Archeology and Art, 2000). . He was a Fellow in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington DC (2001-2002) and Hannah Seeger Davis Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in his Greek Studies Program
Princeton University (2002-2003). He has important publications, while he has edited three volumes of practical conferences. Since May 2014, he has undertaken the coordination of the research program "The Church of the Transfiguration in Sotira Famagusta: History Architecture - Murals", which is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus and funded by the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation.
