Preparations for the opening of the Deryneia roadblock have almost come to an end, according to information cited by the newspaper "Politis" in an article on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, while confirming that EU funding is pending for the work to be done. to be made in the dead zone for both diodes.
Regarding the works in the dead zone, the Turkish Cypriot source noted that the initial agreement for the works in Deryneia was to be made by the competent authorities of the parties as it concerns a short distance, however the Greek Cypriot side asked for European funding. The United Nations is currently expected to announce tenders for the project to be undertaken by a bi-communal consortium.
However, according to the newspaper "Havadis", which published a photo of the road on the north side yesterday, Turkish Cypriot politicians want the Deryneia and Lefkas / Apliki roadblocks to open at the same time. However, local officials who spoke to the newspaper expressed their disagreement, emphasizing that it is better for the roadblock in Deryneia to open before this year's tourist season, as the Lefkas / Apliki roadblock will need more time due to the morphology of the ground. Also on behalf of the local C / C civil society for Famagusta, Serdar Atai and Okan Dagli pointed out that the installation of barbed wire on both sides of the road is pending.
