More about the project:

Stathis Livathinos chose Sophocles' leading work with the idea of combining his presentation with the coexistence on stage of three generations of actors. The play will be presented in a new translation by Dimitris Maronitis.

"Antigone" probably appeared in the Great Dionysia of 441 BC and was written by Sophocles as a reaction to the exile of Themistocles, the winner of the Battle of Salamis. In this work, one of the most complete of ancient Greek drama, the theme of the conflict between the laws of ethics and the laws of the state reaches its climax, with the two heroes verifying their tragic existence, holding, until the end, the position in which fate brought them.

The conflict between Oedipus' two sons, Polyneikis and Eteocles, over the throne of Thebes is over. The two brothers are found dead on the battlefield. Creon, the new king of Thebes, has ordered that Polyneikis, who fought against his homeland, remain unburied. But the sister of the deceased, Antigone, decides to honor him with the proper burial. She is arrested and taken to Creon, who, obeying the laws of the state, sentences her to death. The king remains unconvinced even after the intervention of his son, Aemon, and orders that Antigone be buried alive in a cave. However, the sufferings predicted by the seer Teiresias will not be long in coming. The king's late retreat will not prevent disaster. Antigone has been hanged in her prison, Aemon has committed suicide and Eurydice, Creon's wife, follows her son to death.
