Some 8.000 people in Düsseldorf have been forced to flee their homes after a World War II bomb was detonated this morning, local officials said.

The 250-kilogram bomb was found Wednesday during work in the Rath district of northern Düsseldorf. The area was immediately cordoned off and many roads were closed.

Also, 250 people were evacuated from a hotel in the area, while two highways were closed, which made access to the city airport more difficult.

More than 70 years after the end of World War II, unexploded bombs are still found on German soil. Authorities estimate that there were about 3.000 bombs in the Berlin underground.

On December 25, 54.000 people were evacuated from their homes in Augsburg, southern Germany, after another bomb was found.
