The processes by the occupation regime are at an advanced stage, for the completion of the improvement works of the Famagusta-Deryneia road, so that the Deryneia roadblock can be opened for passage to and from the occupied areas. Recently, on the left side of the road in the direction of Famagusta, asphalt paving materials have been transferred, which are estimated to be used by the occupying authorities for this purpose.

According to the mayor of Deryneia, Andro Karagiannis, the occupying authorities seem to have completed the widening of the road from Famagusta to the dead zone of Deryneia, which will be seven meters wide. On each side of the road there will also be a pedestrian and bicycle path, one meter long.

However, there is still about 150 meters of road widening within the dead zone, which according to the United Nations, will be built on both sides, under the supervision of the international organization. Also, as far as the Greek Cypriot side is concerned, the installation of prefabricated structures that will serve for the accommodation of the competent Services of the Republic, which are estimated to be located near the outpost of the National Guard, is lacking.

With these data, pointed out the mayor of Deryneia, it seems that it is possible for the roadblock of Deryneia to open even within 2016, as was the original goal. Famagusta Avenue, or Deryneias Street as the Varosians called it, has been closed to Famagusta since mid-August 1974, when Attila and his chariots reached the northern outskirts of Deryneia. In the previous days of the war, it had been the escape route for thousands of Famagusta refugees and villages in the province of Famagusta and the Karpasia region.

Before the war, Famagusta Avenue was the main road connecting Famagusta with Kokkinochoria and to a lesser extent the Larnaca-Famagusta road, which connected the city with the province of Larnaca. It was also the road used by many farmers of Kokkinochoria to transport their products to the market of Famagusta, or to the commercial port of the city.

At the local level, the people of Deryni believe for the most part that the opening of the Deryneia roadblock will give more commercial character and traffic to Famagusta Avenue, stimulating and consequently the local economy.
