The Municipality of Famagusta considers as a big mistake the continuation of the degradation of the issue of Famagusta, which, in the opinion of the Municipal Council, is perhaps the strongest paper that the Republic of Cyprus has today against the Turkish occupation and Ankara's strategy towards Cyprus but also Europe in general.
An announcement issued for the last plenary session of the Municipal Council states that the Municipality of Famagusta reaffirms its firm position in support of efforts aimed at finding a peaceful and sustainable solution based on UN resolutions. and the 1977 and 1979 High Level Agreements for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
At the same time, he regrets the interruption of the talks and wishes that they resume as soon as possible with the aim of reaching an agreement on a comprehensive solution that can be accepted by both communities.
He also states unequivocally that he disagrees with any actions that directly or indirectly, either tend to perpetuate and legitimize the current unacceptable and destructive status quo, or do not contribute to the abolition of the occupation and the reunification of our homeland.
Calls once again on the Turkish government to comply with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 and to immediately return Famagusta to its rightful residents, which if it happens, especially at this time, will do its utmost to reduce mistrust and will have a positive effect on efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Calls on the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the political parties to restore in the strongest and clearest way the priority of Famagusta as shown by UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789, the relevant resolutions of the European Parliament but and the Council of Europe.
