The opening of the beach south of the enclosed city of Famagusta is planned by the Turkish Cypriot municipality of the occupied city, according to t / k publications which have raised questions among the Turkish Cypriots, as the area is currently under the control of the occupying troops.

According to media reports, it is planned to improve the current facilities on the 240-meter-long beach in the area of Agios Memnon, just north of the dead zone and south of the enclosed city. The opening of the beach is one of the pre-election commitments of the current T / C mayor, Ismail Arter.

As mentioned, the plan is that the municipality of Famagusta will undertake the upgrade of the beach, with the aim of being open to the public every year from May 15 to October 29.

It is worth noting that the location of this beach is quite close to the roadblock of Deryneia where the excavation works continue. Road upgrade work leading to the roadblock in the free areas is almost complete, as is the occupied side. It remains to upgrade the road within the dead zone, which will be undertaken by a bi-communal consortium with funding already approved by the Commission.

Many ambiguities are pointed out by a Turkish activist

Commenting on the articles in the newspaper "Politis", the activist of the Famagusta Initiative, Mertkan Hamit, pointed out that there are several questions about the planned opening of the beach. For example, whether E / K and foreign nationals will be able to access it, as the beach is located in an area controlled by the occupying army.

"What's the point of not opening the roadblock?" He wondered, referring to the roadblock of Deryneia and noting that without it the route from the free areas to the beach will be unnecessarily long.

Mr Hamit also said it was unclear whether access to the Baroque region and its development was a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, but also whether restrictions such as a ban on photography would be imposed.

The area was, as Mr. Hamit recalls, previously open to bathers with a "identity" t / c display, at least until the mid-1990s. The entrance to the area was from where the opening is currently planned. of the roadblock.

Today, Glossa beach at the northern end of the enclosed city, which is a frequent point of visit and events for refugees from Varosi and E / K and T / K, operates for bathers. As in the case of Language, it is expected that the other beach will be in the "shadow" of the military area and the ghost town of Varosia.
