The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Nikos Kougialis, who is in Brussels for the work of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, requested the acceleration of the establishment of Halloumi by the Commission.

During the discussion on the situation in the international markets, the Minister pointed out to the Commission that trade agreements concluded with third countries do not effectively safeguard the interests of small states and made it clear that all geographical indications will be recognized there.

He even called on the Commission to speed up the ratification of halloumi, which is in its final stages, so that it can be part of the corresponding trade agreement with Japan.

In addition, the Council addressed the situation in its agricultural sector, with the Minister again asking the Commission to provide measures to support the goat and sheep milk sector.

The Commissioner promised to return with a new package of measures soon and the Minister welcomed his statement.

Finally, the Minister asked the Commission to monitor the situation with the Russian embargo: "The Commission must monitor prices so that it is ready to support farmers and the European market in a timely and effective manner," concluded N. Kougialis.
