Updated study by the Reconstruction - Resettlement Council

A new study on the scenario of the return of Famagusta and the actions that should be done in the first days, is being prepared by the Council for Reconstruction and Resettlement.

The Council has been working since 2006 on the Famagusta Emergency Immediate Action Plan, also known as the "Freedom Plan". The plan was updated in 2010, and now the Council is proceeding with a new update based on the new data that have been formed. As the president of the Reconstruction and Resettlement Council, Nikos Mesaritis, stated in our newspaper, the update of the plan is almost completed.

What remains, as he mentioned, is the inclusion of the representatives of the Municipality of Famagusta. It is noted that one of the goals of the update is the whole effort to be fully harmonized with the "Evagoras Plan" of the Police. More specifically, the plan is that in case of return of Famagusta, the Police will enter the area first and then a group of specialists, who will mark the buildings with three colors: Green for those buildings that are safe, yellow for those that present problems and red for what is dilapidated and must be demolished and which will not allow anyone to enter.

In the meantime, the Council is also proceeding with the digital updating of the Famagusta spatial database, as well as the digitization of other archival material. For this purpose, the Ministry of Finance submitted a request to the Finance Committee of the Parliament for the release of a total amount of 10 thousand euros. According to the relevant note, the project concerns the "digital updating of the spatial database of the wider area of the Famagusta urban complex, preparation and conduct of research aimed at recording and studying the way in which public and private bodies of Famagusta are placed, as well as society organizations of citizens, on a number of issues related to the urban future of the city, and coordination of the work of EMAE (Famagusta Study Advisory Group: Urban Approach) ".

The project also concerns "the collection and verification of information and data, such as photographs, maps, videos, books, etc., that are available to government agencies, civil society organizations and individuals regarding memories of the city, the lives of people in city and the physical condition of its building stock, and the digitization of all archival material, its categorization into groups (public buildings, schools, hotels, churches, streets, squares, events, persons, etc.), preparation of identification cards of the building stock of the city for the creation of history of buildings, streets, squares, etc., mapping of the archival material that will be collected using equipment and software, collaboration with the Documentation Committee (small group of Famagusta) with strong memories to verify the information it will collect, as well as to facilitate the mapping of archival material, and to prepare a report, which will describe in detail the results of this process ".
