The candidate that the citizens will choose in the upcoming Presidential Elections of February 2018 must have multiple and important characteristics. According to the findings of a poll conducted by the IMR Office / University of Nicosia on behalf of the newspaper "Today", the candidate, among others, must have a strong personality, be militant, honest and promote the interests of the place, while if he is young or has good relations with both EU leaders. as well as with leaders of other countries is an additional positive element.

At the same time, the citizens attach great importance to the candidate's positions in all important areas (Cyprus, economy, internal governance), while they consider the negotiations on the Cyprus issue and the fight against youth unemployment as the main priorities that the young person should have. Honesty and strong personality
At the same time, the citizens consider it very important for the candidate for the Presidency of the Republic to be honest and to have a strong personality. In particular, on a scale of 1 (not at all important) to 10 (very important) honesty scores 9,59 and strong personality 9,26. Quite an important element that should govern a candidate for the citizens is that he has a sense of national conscience (8,88), has experience in political events (8,882) and is a visionary (8,32). Less important for citizens is whether it will be low-key, as this figure is 6,22.

Experience and good relations with leaders of other countries
Citizens are looking for a candidate who has personal experience in politics and good relations with both leaders of the European Union and leaders of other countries in general, as such characteristics will greatly positively affect their vote. In particular, having experience in politics is a positive for 91%, while having good relations with EU leaders. is a plus for 86% (89% good relations with leaders of other countries in general).

Positively affects the vote of citizens to be a university graduate (84%), to be a technocrat (74%), to hold a previous state position (68%), to be a good family man (75%) and to be young (64%) . It would negatively affect the vote of the citizens, if in the family of the candidate there is a tradition in politics at a rate of 39% or if it comes from a wealthy family at a rate of 37%. Whether he is a businessman or a business executive does not concern the citizens.

Both a technocrat and a party official
Citizens show a preference for a candidate who is a technocrat and a party official, since in a relevant question, 56% state that it is important for them to have both of these characteristics equally. For 35% of the citizens it is important to be a technocrat, while for one in five it is considered important to be a party official.

At the same time, citizens are almost divided on whether to take a risk or follow a safe path, as 52% show a preference for a candidate who takes a risk, while 46% choose a candidate who follows a safe path. A 2% are not placed on this topic.

All areas are important
Citizens attach great importance to the candidate's positions in all important sectors (Cyprus, economy, internal governance). On a scale from 1 (not at all important) to 5 (very important), the citizens evaluate the sector of the economy with 4,68, the Cyprus issue with 4,59 and the internal governance with 4,44.
As a result, the citizens are asking for a change of course in all the above-mentioned areas from the candidate they will support. In particular, 67% demand a change of course in the Cyprus issue (32% not to change course), while in the internal government 74% demand a change of course (25% not to change course). On the issue of economics, 54% believe that the candidate should change course and 45% have the opposite view.

Cyprus and unemployment in the priorities
Talks on the Cyprus issue and the fight against youth unemployment are considered to be the main priorities that the new president should have both in the first report and in the general report. In particular, talks on the Cyprus issue are a priority for 55% (78% of the total report), while the fight against youth unemployment is for 14% (47% of the total report). The third priority is health reform, followed by attracting investment and the wider economy. Citizens also attach great importance to strengthening the security of the place, as well as to the reform of education. Tax cuts, internal governance and sources of energy are some of the priorities that the new President should have, but they are rated lower than other issues.

Abstention is close to 20%
A majority of 80% of respondents said they would definitely vote (56%) and will probably vote (24%) in the upcoming presidential election, as opposed to 12% who say they will probably abstain and an 8% who are now clear that they will definitely not vote. Regarding the interest in the developments regarding the Presidential one, one in four states that they are interested to a great extent and one in three to a considerable extent, while 22% are interested to a small extent and one in five is not interested at all.

The 45-64 age group is the most interested in the developments, followed by those aged 65 and over. For young people aged 18-24, only one in three are interested in developments. Regarding the information about the developments, 19% of the respondents state that they are informed to a large extent and 37% to a sufficient extent, 28% to a small extent, while 16% are not informed at all.
