The Municipality of Sotiras in collaboration with a network of research partners, public bodies and local authorities proceeded to submit a research proposal within the transnational cooperation program Greece Cyprus 2014-2020 entitled "Intelligent Greenhouses for Sustainable Food Production - INTELLIGENCE".
The object of the proposal, coordinated by the Municipality of Sotira, concerns the design and development of intelligent sustainable greenhouses, which will integrate all state-of-the-art technologies, in order to save resources and improve agricultural production.
According to the Mayor Sotiras, Mr. Georgios Takkas, in the framework of the proposal, the Municipality of Sotiras is requesting funding for the development of a pilot unit within the Municipality, which will demonstrate innovative principles in agriculture such as the use of infrared radiation (cold storage principle), hydroponics applications but also integrated practices for the management of generated greenhouse waste.
The possible implementation of the project, as stated by Mayor Sotiras, is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of the farming community both in the Municipality of Sotiras and in other rural areas of Cyprus and Greece, as it is expected to create the necessary infrastructure for sustainable and cost-effective solutions. agricultural production.
The principle of intelligent greenhouse, said Mr. Takkas, is an innovative solution that enhances the protection of the environment and the more efficient use of resources in the field of waste, with direct effects on both soil quality and the reduction of air pollution. .
The proposal was submitted by the Municipality of Sotiras together with the Institute of Agricultural Research and the Frederick Research Center (Cypriot network), the TEI of Western Greece, the Agricultural Detention Center "Agia" and the Municipality of Kissamos in Crete (Greek network).
