Processed meat is in the spotlight and is expected to be classified as "potentially carcinogenic to humans," according to the Independent.

A source told the Daily Mail that the announcements, which are expected to be made on Monday, will put processed meat in the same category as cigarettes, alcohol and asbestos.

"People who eat a lot of these meats are at a higher risk of bowel cancer than those who eat small amounts," the report said.

However beef, lamb and pork can be part of a healthy diet and that red meat is a good source of protein and provides vitamins and minerals such as iron and zinc.

It is noted that research conducted in 2014 showed that people who consume even moderate amounts of processed red meat, such as salami, sausages, hamburgers, ham and bacon, are at increased risk of heart problems or premature death due to heart disease.

According to a Swedish-Polish scientific study, processed meat has undergone some kind of processing, with the addition of salt and preservatives or some other method of processing, for example "smoked" cold cuts contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
