In a similar way as a week ago on the highway to Paphos, a new accident occurred on Wednesday on the expressway to Ayia Napa.

a 1085 Nea Famagusta

One car had stopped in the emergency lane of the highway for damage, and a passing car collided violently with the stopped one. In both cases, under tragic conditions, the people in the immobilized vehicles were killed.

On the occasion of the two fatal road accidents that occurred on highways, the Traffic Department of the Police Headquarters in consultation with the Press Office of the Police announced the measures that all drivers must take in case their vehicles are damaged or the car is damaged. need for emergency parking:

>> We must avoid stopping at the side of the highway and where possible drive our car carefully to the nearest exit in order to find a secured spot to park, while taking all necessary safety measures.

>> We turn on the emergency lights.

>> We carefully get off the vehicle after making sure that no other cars are coming.

>> If we transport other people in the vehicle, we help them to get out of the vehicle from the side that is not on the road and we invite them to go to a safe place away from the road.

>> We place the safety warning triangles in front of and behind our immobilized vehicle.

>> If it is night we wear phosphorescent vest and make sure we have enough lighting to be visible from passing cars.

>> If we have to wait for roadside assistance, it is better for us to move away from the road to a safe place until the roadside assistance arrives.

In cases where there is no other way out and parking in the emergency lane is mandatory, the Police advise drivers to stop their vehicle as far away from the road as possible and as close to the railing as possible.

After turning on the emergency lights, they lower the other passengers from the side of the railing and never from the side of the road and carry them behind the protective bars.

Drivers should be aware that in the event of immobilisation, stopping or parking of their vehicle due to vehicle damage or an emergency on the motorway, they must be especially careful as the possibility of a new accident is not remote, with danger to the driver and passengers.

The Police also informs all drivers and passengers of the vehicles about the actions they must take in case of a car accident on the highway. He even emphasizes that the security measures that will be taken are very important until the arrival of the Police, the Fire Brigade and the ambulance:

>> We quickly and calmly assess the scene of the incident to make sure that the environment is safe (there is no danger from other passing cars, etc.)

>> We protect ourselves and others by taking all appropriate protection measures, as mentioned above, for all vehicles involved (if there is a vehicle on the motorway)

>> When there are injured, we do not move them unless absolutely necessary (when there is danger to their lives eg from passing cars or in case of fire) and transport them to a safe place

>> We never remove the protective helmet from an injured person,
riding a motorcycle / moped, even if the injured person looks well, unless absolutely necessary

>> We ask for the help of those present, we call 112 or 199 for an ambulance giving accurate information about the incident and we remove the strangers, helping the smooth running of the traffic.

In the event of a fire in a vehicle, the Police inform that they must first be stopped in the safety belt. Then, without wasting time, we help all the passengers to get out of the vehicle, after making sure that the road is clear of cars at the point of the car that has not been ignited in the flames.

Then with the help of a fire extinguisher, if possible, we try to put out the flames until the arrival of the Fire Department.
