Shocking is the description of the captain of the ferry Agios Nektarios who located the 5-year-old girl floating in the sea in the port of Piraeus and notified the authorities to mobilize and the child to be initially treated at the General Hospital of Nikaia "Agios Panteleis" of the Children "Agia Sophia".

"I saw only his hands"

"I saw it floating alone in the sea. He was drowning about 60 meters from my ship. I was about to jump into the sea to help it but the authorities arrived very quickly after we notified them and took it out. I was informed that he is now in the Intensive Care Unit ".

"The child was very close to the port but he was small, he did not know how to swim. "I only saw his hands," the ship's captain, Apostolos Lazaridis, told ANT1.

The child was alone on the pier

According to Mr. Lazaridis, the 5-year-old was alone at the pier and as she estimates, she slipped when she approached the water.

"The ship was moored and I was on the bridge because in 5 minutes we would leave. "I saw the child in the sea but I was away from him", he said to protothema.gr.

"The child was near the pier. It was not very deep. He had probably slipped but he was alone at that moment, I did not see anyone else. Then his mother came from afar. "I saw her shouting and screaming", Mr. Lazaridis emphasizes.

A little while later, the captain saw the men of the port offering first aid to the unfortunate child and putting him in the ambulance. "I did not believe that he was alive and that he would succeed. "I only know that when he dived he was alone and could not swim", he adds.

How the 5-year-old was saved

After the master notified the authorities, officers of the port corps immediately went to the area, where they located and retrieved the minor, to whom they provided cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CARPA), as a result of which she regained consciousness.

The minor girl was transported by EKAB ambulance initially to the General Hospital of Nikaia "Agios Panteleimon", accompanied by a port officer, while then she was transported to the Children's Hospital "Aglaia Kyriakou", where she is being treated.

The 37-year-old mother of the little girl was arrested by the First Port Department of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus for conducting the preliminary investigation and is expected to be taken to the Piraeus Prosecutor's Office today as part of the spontaneous procedure.
